Material Price Index

The material price index is a projection used in the EIA National Energy Modeling System and represents how material prices (e.g., price of steel and cement) might change over time. For any EIA-based CAPEX projections (biopower, coal, natural gas, and nuclear), we remove the material price index by dividing the EIA CAPEX values by the value shown in the table below. We do not include the material price index in order to extract the raw learning-rate-based values from the EIA projections.
